After a 20 minute bus ride zig-zagging up the mountain we arrived at the lost city, “Machu Picchu." We arrived to clouds and heavy rain, but we expected this since it was rainy season. We pulled out our ponchos and proceeded to take a guided tour during that time. Big Sis was quite a trooper- hiking all day without complaining once! About an hour into the tour, Lil Sis fell asleep in Kara's arms- so Kara ended up hiking while carrying the sleeping 3-yr-old for 30 minutes. Quite a workout! By 11:30am the sky cleared and we spent the second half of our day at Machu Picchu under beautiful sunshine. You can see the rainy and sunny pictures below.
The train ride back from Machu Picchu also afforded some beautiful scenery, especially the first half as we rode alongside the raging Urubamba river.
Despite the 2 hour delay to to a landslide on the track (!) the kids really enjoyed the train ride. The folk music, dancers, alpaca-wear fashion show, and snack baskets helped pass the time.
