We began our road trip by crossing over to the west coast of the island via Arthur's Pass, the steepest and most scenic crossing over the Southern Alps which divide the east and west regions of this island. Our ears had popped by the time we reached the visitor center at Arthur's Pass National Park. There were interesting displays for the kids about the history of the pass (think stagecoach travel), the alpine terrain, and native plants and animals. We hiked to the Devil's Punchbowl waterfalls.
