The Great Barrier Reef: the largest living structure on the planet (larger than the Great Wall of China), and the only living thing on earth visible from the moon. Today we saw it firsthand!
We headed toward the outer reef, which is 30 miles off shore. The kids had been practicing snorkeling in our pool for a couple days, so they were ready to go when we arrived to our first reef stop. We all hopped off the back of the boat and navigated the multiple reefs together.
What an amazing experience for our family to experience together. We saw so many huge, beautiful corals, fish, turtles, jellyfish, rays, and even a shark.
We spent a full day at sea, with the boat moving 3 times to different reefs, to best appreciate the variety of types of coral and marine life. Some reefs are flat, some are deep, and some pile up 30+ meters from the ocean floor in tall, tapered sculptures called bommies. It was quite a different perspective to be swimming and look around yourself 360 degrees to see nothing but ocean.

We were so giddy at the end of the night! We couldn’t stop marveling at all the different fish we saw, and just being amazed at God’s creation. We had a little dance party, singing, “This is What we Came For…” 😂
