We spent three days in Dunedin with the most amazing Servas hosts ever. They had been sheep farmers and told us stories that enlightened these city slickers. They cooked us delicious meals and took us on amazing hikes and tours as if we’d hired them. In addition, their house sits on a hill overlooking the South Pacific Ocean, with breathtaking views from every window.
It was a very sweet time fellowshipping with this dear couple and we hope to have a chance to host them on our side of the world!
Highlights:
- Walking the trail behind their house through a bird sanctuary
- Checking traps in the bush for possums, stoats, and other harmful predators to the native birds (caught one- ew!)
- Finding sea lions at the beach
- Hiking through cow and sheep pastures and learning about farming
- Climbing the rocks at the beach to end up very close to 50+ seals and seal pups
- Herding sheep from the beach back into the pasture they had escaped from
- Attending church with our hosts
- Concert in the park/botanical gardens
- Trying NZ ice cream flavors hokey pokey and gold rush
- Scenic lookout spot at the top of Dunedin
- Crawling up the steepest street in the world
- Tremendous library of classic children's book (girls were in heaven)
- Riding our host's homemade children's “trollies” down the driveway hill
