Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a fiord known for towering Mitre Peak, plus rainforests and waterfalls, which plummet down its steep sides. The fiord is home to fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins. 

We took a 2.5 hour boat ride through the Sound, passing from sun to rain and back again. Rain means more waterfalls, so that was not a problem. The boat had an inside option, which also came in handy when we drove underneath one of the waterfalls! 

Some playful dolphins came right up to our boat. Some swam along in front of our boat, seemingly showing off diving and jumping alongside us, often in pairs. A couple others followed behind the boat frolicking in the wake. We thought for sure the boat threw fish in the water, but the nature guide assured me they don't do that- it was just a very lucky day that we were able to see them so close.

We also took many short hikes around Milford Sound. We were most awed by "The Chasm," where a powerful waterfall has carved it's way through the rocks, leaving many smooth, circular areas created by the force of water swirling through with small stones. Over time all these circular cutouts were formed/are still being formed. It was astounding to stand on a bridge over the center of it and watch the power of the water flow.
